Early Life and Background

Osman Hadi was born on 30 June 1993 in Nalchity, Jhalakathi District, Bangladesh. Originally named Osman Goni, he later became widely known as Osman Hadi. He pursued education at Nesarabad Kamil Madrasa and later attended the University of Dhaka. Over time, Hadi emerged as a prominent writer, teacher, and social activist with a particular focus on youth involvement in national affairs.

Rise to Prominence

Hadi rose to national prominence through his role as a co-founder and spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, a socio-cultural and political platform formed in August 2024 at Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student Centre. Inqilab Mancha became a central voice of the youth during the July Revolution, advocating for justice, equality, and national sovereignty.

Under Hadi’s leadership, Inqilab Mancha organized rallies, human chains, and press conferences. The movement called for wide political reforms, including opposition to what Hadi described as foreign interference and demands for accountability in governance. His outspoken criticism of longstanding political structures and call for institutional reform resonated widely with students and young Bangladeshis.

The July Revolution and National Impact

The July Revolution was a transformative period in Bangladesh’s recent history, culminating in the resignation of long-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. The movement, which saw participation from students, professionals, and citizens nationwide, ultimately led to landmark political changes. August 5 is now observed annually as July Mass Uprising Day, commemorating the end of the previous government’s rule.

Assassination and Legacy

On 12 December 2025, Osman Hadi was shot in the Paltan area of Dhaka while traveling after Jumma prayers. He was critically injured and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment. Despite efforts to save his life, Hadi passed away on 18 December 2025 at a hospital in Singapore at the age of 32.

Hadi’s assassination sparked widespread reactions nationally. The government declared a one-day state mourning, and national flags were flown at half-mast in his honor. His death also triggered protests and demonstrations across major cities, reflecting the deep emotional impact of his loss.

Thousands attended his funeral in Dhaka, where he was laid to rest beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, a symbolic tribute to his influence and stature in Bangladesh’s contemporary history.
