Paddy Cultivation in Bangladesh: A Complete Guide from Sowing to Harvesting

📈 Enhancing Paddy Production in Bangladesh

  • Adopt HYVs and Hybrids: To increase yield potential.

  • Mechanization: Utilize machinery for land preparation, transplanting, and harvesting to reduce labor costs.

  • Training and Extension Services: Engage with agricultural extension officers for updated practices and technologies.

Bangladesh cultivates paddy in three seasons:

  • Aus (March–July)

  • Aman (July–December)

  • Boro (December–May)

Opt for high-yielding varieties (HYVs) like BRRI dhan48, which are widely recommended by BRRI and BAU for their productivity and stress resistance

2. Seed Preparation & Treatment

Use certified, disease-free seeds. Soak them for 24 hours, then incubate 48 hours to stimulate sprouting. Treat with fungicides to prevent seed-borne infection .

3. Land Preparation

Plough thoroughly to fine tilth and level it for even water distribution. Incorporate organic compost to boost fertility.

4. Sowing and Transplanting

  • Direct seeding is common for Aus. Ensure row spacing ~25 cm, seed spacing ~15 cm (dry-seeded Boro method)

  • Nursery & transplanting (20–30 days old seedlings) is popular

5. Water Management

Maintain a flooded field (~5–25 cm water depth depending on growth stage). Aman relies on monsoon, Boro needs irrigation, and Aus may need supplemental watering
In Boro, traditional clay methods require up to 3,500 L/kg rice; new dry-direct methods cut tha

6. Nutrient Management

Apply balanced N-P-K fertilizers. Practice split dosing of nitrogen—basal, tillering, and panicle stages. Soil tests help optimize fertilizer use
Use urea super-granules to maximize efficiency

7. Weed, Pest & Disease Control

Weed manually around 20–40 days after transplanting, or use pre-emergent herbicides. Monitor pests (stem borers, planthoppers); apply IPM methods and selective insecticides as needed .

8. Harvesting

Harvest when ~80–85% grains on panicle turn golden. For manual harvesting, cut with sickles ~4–5 cm above ground.
For mechanized operations, use combine harvesters that cut, thresh, and clean in one pass.

9. Post‑Harvest Handling

  • Threshing: separate grain from stalk using pedal or mechanical threshers .

  • Drying: reduce moisture to 12–14%

  • Cleaning and storage: remove impurities and store in dry, ventilated condition.

Why This Matters in Bangladesh

Bangladesh produced about 39.1 million tonnes of rice in 2023, ranking 3rd globally . The shift toward Boro season and HYVs has significantly boosted yields, though challenges remain from mechanization gaps, water shortages, and pest pressures .

Final Tips for Farmers

  • Embrace dry-direct seeding in Boro to conserve water

  • Rely on soil testing and improved fertilizer forms for yield enhancement

  • Apply IPM strategies to reduce pest losses and increase profit

  • Time harvest accurately to cut quality loss from insects, rain, or shatter
